Do Tums Really Neutralize Acid?
A wide ranging discussion before the experiment!
We measured 25 ml of lemon juice into a cup and tested the
acidity with pH strips. Then we crushed individual Tums tablets and added them to the lemon juice. We stirred until the powder dissolved -- this was a little hard to see.
After a while no more Tums would dissolve.
We reduced the acidity of the lemon juice by more than a factor of 100!!
Later we tested the acidity of a variety of things with pH strips.
We determined that oranges and tomatoes are more acid than our treated lemon juice.
Windex is very basic and showed pretty blue and purple colors on the pH strip!
