Keynote Speaker Dr. Sumru Erkut (left) spoke about her research on the correlations between high school sports and young adult women's sexual behavior.
Some of her conclusions:
>> Women high school athletes have
higher graduation rates than non-
athletes (the opposite of men).
>> On average women athletes
become sexually active 4 months
later than non-athletes.
>> Athletes have few sexual partners. >> Athletes are more likely to use
protection.
5 years later, high school athletes on average still exhibit less risky sexual behavior -- this holds for most girls of very different backgrounds.
She concluded that a physical sense of having a healthy body was more important than the self-esteem gained from sports in changing risky behavior.
New England Regional Director Marcelline Barron (left) introduced luncheon speaker Dr. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux from the University of Vermont (right). Dr. Dupigny-Giroux received a publication grant from the Educational Foundation for the 2003 - 2004 academic year. She is the Vermont state climatologist (one of two women in that post across the US) and an associate professor of geography. Her research focuses on the topography and precipitation characteristics that are most conducive to flooding in New England. She has been invited to speak at our state convention on April 30, 2005.
